This is phase 2 of the Plains Division, a model that is being built in stages and is intended to portray modern US railroading. (Phase 1, Industry Yard has been widely exhibited at model railway exhibitions over the last two years).
This model represents the rail yard in Ellison, a medium sized town somewhere west of the Mississippi on the Great Plains. It is situated along the lines of a single track, secondary, east to west, main line, which is sometimes used by other railroads as a relief route. Ellison is the local centre of an agricultural based economy with the railroad being the principal carrier of bulk products with the township being scattered along the lind of the track.
The west end of the yard is marked by the interstate highway overpass, whilst a similar overpass carrying a local highway marks the eastern boundary of the model, although, in reality, the yard would extend much further east. The yard is dominated by the grain elevator to the north, which ships various products throughout the year. An adjacent track provides extra storage for wagons during the grain rush.
The locos consist of Athearn, Bachmann, Walthers, Atlas and Lifelike with the track being Peco code 75 ballasted with Woodland Scenic. Controllers are from KPC handheld and is cab controlled. Buildings, bridges, structures, etc. are all scratch built.
