The slate quarry at Cefn Gam really did exist. It was situated in the hills to the north of the Mawddach estuary in Merionethshire. The trouble was that the quarry, which was established early in the 19th century, was situated at too great a distance from the river and, although the slate was of excellent quality, it proved too expensive to transport it to the river. Had the quarry been established, say 40 years later, it would have been a prime candidate for rail transportation and my layout would not have been a "might have been".
Trackwork is Peco 7mm narrow gauge which is laid on cork and ballasted with slate ballast (mostly from my good friend John Lloyd of Green Scene). Buildings are mainly of foam board which are coated with modelling clay and then scribed. Detail work is done using cardboard and the roofing slates are also of this material. Windows and doors come from the usual suppliers as do such things as guttering, downpipes and bargeboarding, etc. The electrical side of the layout is not my favourite aspect and I have been most grateful for advice from friends and the great help I have received from Pat Ryan of Modelex.
The period modelled is 'fluid' but purports to be whilst the quarry was in production and also a tourist interest with the date some time before the Second World War.
