Kaüpatz is a fictional small town in Bavaria, not far away from the Austrian border. The railway was building the late 19th century to serve the local brewery and to transport farm and dairy produce to market. This was then further developed by the forward thinking burghers of the town who recognized the area's potential for tourism. Why Bavaria? I like the quirkiness of the loco designs, rakes of four-wheeled carriages with the grand scenery.
So much for fiction; this is the third layout I have build on HO scale but the first foray into the steam era. Previous layouts have been set in Austria but very much in the modern day with electric traction being the mainstay of the motive power.
As with previous layouts, rolling stock is principally Fleischmann with some Roco, Trix and Rivarossi locomotives courtesy of leasing arrangements with friends. A number of freight vehicles are by the former East German manufacturer, Piko.
