I have tried to create the feeling of a small compact industrial area served by a light railway on the south side of the River Clyde in the mid 1950s. The Napier Street branch was built between 1886 and 1897 and ran immediately east of Govan.
In an unprecedented spirit of co-operation, the joint line was a mature venture by The Caledonian, Glasgow, and South Western, and the North British Railways. It opened for goods traffic only on August 17th, 1903 and curved away from the Govan branch at Ibrox, passed under Glasgow Rangers Stadium, ran alongside Brand Street before turning into the River Side Engineering Works under Govan Road. The line crossing at right angles is the Clyde Port Authority line from Mavisbank Quay to General Terminus.
The line was busy in the 1950s depicted by this layout but traffic declined in the 1960 and finally closed in the 1970s. The reclaimed site was used as part of the 1988 Glasgow Garden Festival.
The layout was featured in the March 2000 British Railway Modeller and Model Railway Journal no. 128.
