The inspiration for the layout came from reading about the line which once passed through the centre of Tewkesbury. The line was built by the Birmingham & Gloucester Railway and later became part of the Midland. It served a single road engine shed and continued on to a wharf on the river Avon. According to magazine articles, the shed was at times visited by locos up to the size of class 6 4-6-0s. The layout is not a model of the line, but takes many of its features from it.
In the fictional world of the layout, a ruined castle has been introduced at the left hand end, its grounds being just behind the engine shed. The wharf, at the other end, may have originated in mediaeval times to serve the castle - hence the name of the layout (no name has been given to the town).
The base is made from 'Sundeals' board on a plywood frame. The track is 'Peco' code 75. The buildings and scenery make use of assorted proprietary kits and parts (which modellers will probably recognise) with some scratch building. The backscene has been created by collage using commercial backscene sheets and pictures are cut from brochures and calendars. Control is through 'H&M' equipment.
