Woodcliff Yard

David Woodward (WRMS)

Scale: 3.5 mm Gauge 16.5 mm/HO

It is springtime in the early 1960s on the outskirts of Richmond, Virginia on the east coast of America. The two long time rivals for the lucrative New York to Florida traffic, the Seaboard Air Line (SAL) and the Atlantic Coast Line (ACL) have started talks about a possible merger, this will eventually take place in July 1967. For the time being though, they still use separate freight yards in Richmond, the SAL having its own facility at Hermitage Yard while the ACL used the Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac's Acca Yard. Although the two yards were almost adjacent to each other, it is assumed for modelling purposes, that they were on opposite sides of the city, thereby giving rise to a number of transfer workings between the two.

This is a first attempt at American modelling after many years as an LNER enthusiast, what started out as a bit of light relief and an 'exhibition quickie' has in fact taken all my time over the past year!
